Balin

Character Profile:

Not long after Smaug took over the ‘Lonely Mountain’ a fight broke out including The Orks and the dwarfs. One of the very few who survived is a dwarf named Balin. Balin is a member of Thorin Oakenshield’s party of dwarves who went on a quest to retrieve what had been stolen from them. Throughout the gripping adventure, Balin appears to be a particular character who becomes a close companion with Bilbo Baggins. This is indicated in the novel when Bilbo was down and homesick, Balin would comfort him.

Balin

Characterisation:

Balin is a highly respected individual in The Hobbit by reason of him being the oldest of the dwarves. This encourages the other characters to visualize him as a father figure. In addition to this, multiple times throughout the novel Balin presents his fatherly instincts for instance when he provided advice to the other dwarves. He often spoke to Thorin about his personal opinion on specific matters to do with he quest and that Thorin’s decision wouldn’t impact their relationship.

Character Development:

Balin’s character develops countlessly throughout the novel. For example the relationship between Balin and Bilbo evolves drastically, as result becoming close friends. It is also apparent that his patience with Thorin develops due to Balin’s confidence increasing. At the start he was leniant and hesitant with Thorin when he was in the wrong and Balin had his doubts. As the novel progresses, he realises that even though Thorin’s character is controlling and intimidating, Balin can stand up for himself and go with his gut instinct as oppose to following something that may appear incorrect or unjust.

Bilbo Baggins

Characterisation:

Bilbo Baggins portrays bravery and courage throughout the novel The Hobbit. In addition to this Bilbo proves to the dwarves his ability to manipulate and persuade through speech. This is indicated when Bilbo plies with Smaug and assures him he isn’t engaged within the dwarves activity. Bilbo finds the Arkenstone while arguing with the dragon and all the dwarves are able to escape unharmed.

Bilbo Baggins

Character Profile:

Bilbo Baggins, the protagonist in the novel The Hobbit, is one of the many fictional characters involved within the text. Hobbits are approximately half the height of humans, beardless and have hairy, unproportionally large feet. Much the same of most hobbits, Bilbo is very fond of the comforts of his own home. He appreciates delicious, simple food and always ensures his pantry is packed with various ingredients. Bilbo loves his pipe and his well-equipped, luxurious hobbit-hole. He is humble and is not afraid to speak his mind.

Character Development:

Bilbo Baggins experienced tasks that further refined his character in bravery and confidence. Bilbo and Gollum were playing riddles which involved problem solving and rapid thinking and as a result of his achievement it increased his confidence. When Bilbo defeated the spider he gained respect from the other dwarves from the unexpected accomplishment.

Lord Elrond

Character Development:

Lord Elrond’s development involved qualities he already had, bravery and consideration. This is hinted when the dwarves showed a lack of respect yet he patiently treated them as though they demonstrated high appreciation by supporting their mission and providing needs and supplies. Although Lord Elrond isn’t a major part in the novel, he is very helpful to the dwarves with helping them in their quest to the Lonely Mountain.

Lord Elrond

Character Profile:

Lord Elrond is the lord of Rivendell, he was also known as the ‘Elf of the Cave’ since Elrond was found abandoned in a cave at a very young age. He portrays a character who is extremely wise while also being exceptionally kind and humble. His power was telepathy which he often uses throughout the novel.

Characterisation:

For the duration of this novel, Lord Elrond protrays a wise, calm and fair character. Elegancy is indicated through his outfits and accessories, his movements and manner of speech. He shows his kindness to the dwarves when he helps them with reading the map and when he lets them eat his food.

The Hobbit

The novel The Hobbit was published in 1932 by J.R.R Tolkien. The setting is within a fictional universe where a Hobbit named Bilbo Baggins is challenged to complete a quest to help thirteen dwarves retrieve their mountain. Along the way, Bilbo, Gandalf and the dwarves face various obstacles which they have to conquer to repossess their rightful belongings.
